Protein that prevents spread of cancer

In a major breakthrough that might increase the survival rate of cancer patients, an American research team has identified a protein which inhibits spread of affected cells to other parts of the body from a carcinogenic tumour.

Researchers at Children's Hospital Boston have isolated a protein called prosaposin which stops metastasis or the spread of cancer cells to other parts of the body, by blocking the growth of blood vessels.
Assistant Professor Randoph S Watnick here found that metastatic tumours prepare landing places in distant organs for their migration, by secreting certain proteins that encourage tumour growth and attract feeder blood vessels.
Now, he and his colleagues show that non-metastatic tumours secrete a protein called prosaposin -- which inhibits metastasis by causing production of factors that block the growth of blood vessels. "Prosaposin, or derivatives that stimulate p53 activity in a similar manner in the tumour stroma, might be an effective way to inhibit the metastatic process in humans," says Watnick in his findings, which were published in the online edition of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences during the week of June 22.

salman says ,He is not single

Salman Khan is not single. The actor made the announcement loud and clear during his TV show Dus Ka Dum. Playing Dus Ka Dum with Salman was Mallika Sherawat. And while Salman is famous for throwing googlies at his guests on the show, it seems Mallika was a tad too much for him to handle. While Salman may have thought he will put Mallika in a tight spot by asking her personal questions, it was Salman who ended up being caught in the web. He had to admit he was not single anymore.

Flying car on its way by 2011

The flying car is on its way.An American company Terrafugia Transition, based near Boston, is set to unveil the dual-purpose car-cum-plane vehicle called 'The Flying Car' as early as 2011. The two-seater vehicle can let you fly if you wish to avoid the congested city traffic. If you want to drive on the road, just touch the road. The vehicle will fold up its wings in 30 seconds and transform itself into a car. "The Flying Car" can travel up to 725 kilometres in the air at a speed of more than 115 kilometres per hour. Fuelled by gasoline, it has front wheel drive on the road and a propeller for flight. With its wings folded, it can be parked in your ordinary car garage. Its initial cost is expected to be around $200,000 (nearly Rs.1 crore), says the company which has already orders for 60 vehicles. The CEO of the company told Canadian TV (CTV) network here that they have successfully test-flown "The Flying Car" as many as 28 times. The tests have shown that the vehicle can drive, fly and switch from being a plane to a car in just 30 seconds. "It (testing) has been very successful," Carl Dietrich, co-founder and CEO of Terrafugia, told the television network. " We have got a very good handling vehicle and our test pilot said that the flights were just remarkably unremarkable - it just flies like a really nice, little airplane,” he said. He said this miracle vehicle will ease problems for pilots who currently face problems like weather which sometimes doesn't allow them to take off or land. "This vehicle allows a pilot any time, if the weather changes, to divert to the nearest airport, fold up their wings and drive safely under the weather." "The Transition (the name for "The Flying Car" is not designed to replace the automobile. However, it will solve transportation issues for a variety of circumstances,” company vice president Richard Gersh said. Asked whether the vehicle will be mass produced one day, he said: "That is certainly a possibility, but a number of years away." He said the vehicle will be able travel on ordinary roads. "Our depositors represent a wide-cross section in terms of age, interests, and intended use of the vehicle. We have deposits from both experienced pilots and non-pilots who intend to earn their Sport Pilot certificate," said the vice president of Terrafugia. Set up in 2006, Terrafugia is run by trained aeronautical engineers and MBAs from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

Don't loose weight quickly after pregnancy

most of them have started a new craze among new mums - shedding baby weight immediately after giving birth.

Don’t worry about post-partum flab! But according to a new study women should not put themselves under too much pressure straight away. Experts from German Institute for Quality and Efficiency in Health Care (IQWiG) have revealed that overdoing early weight loss
attempts could have a negative impact on breastfeeding.
They said that weight gain during pregnancy is not only normal, it is necessary.
The mother's body has to nourish the growing baby.
Her body needs to take on more fluid to support the extra circulation the placenta and baby need. Some of this added weight will usually be lost as soon as the baby is born.
"Often, the extra effort women have to make to look after a new baby and breastfeed after giving birth means the kilos just melt away without effort," according to the Institute''s Director, Professor Peter Sawicki. "But for about half of all women, the weight will not go away as quickly," her added.

However, eating for two in pregnancy can cause problems if you are overweight.
Recent studies have revealed that women who have become overweight or more overweight during pregnancy have a higher chance of ongoing weight problems if they are not back to a normal weight within six months or a year after having a baby.
"Avoiding weight problems after birth means already being careful about balanced and healthy eating during pregnancy," said Professor Sawicki. "It is not a good idea to ''eat for two'' in pregnancy and forget about your weight until after the baby is born if you are at all overweight or prone to overweight already.Women need to eat well enough for themselves and their baby, but pregnancy is not a time to overeat," he added.
Exercise is important when people are overweight, but after pregnancy, a lot of exercise does not necessarily help a great deal. The evidence shows that a balanced diet helps "with or without extra exercise".

Joseph brooks oscar winner accused of rape

Joseph Brooks, who won an Oscar in 1978 for the song "You Light Up", was arrested Tuesday and charged with sexually assaulting
Oscar winning songwriter and director Joseph Brooks is led by police in handcuffs 11 women. According to Manhattan District Attorney Robert Morgenthau, Brooks, 71, used Craigslist and a talent web site to lure his victims by promising private auditions at his Manhattan apartment. Brooks pleaded not guilty at his arraignment Tuesday and was freed on bail of $500,000. Morgenthau said that Brooks would pay for the women to travel to New York from the Seattle and Portland areas to audition for a role as a boozy prostitute trying to seduce a man. Once in his apartment Brooks forced them to drink a large glass of red wine, which may have been drugged. "He may very well have drugged them," Lisa Friel, chief of the District Attorney's sex crimes unit, told the New York Daily News. "But he certainly forced them to drink quantities of wine that left them incapacitated." Two of the women complained to rape counsellors, leading police to launch an investigation that led to the other women. Morgenthau said that prosecutors were looking at other possible sexual assaults as far back as 1970. Also charged was Shawni Lucier, Brooks' personal assistant, who prosecutors said helped recruit the 18- to 30-year-old women and who faces nine counts of criminal facilitation.

New turn in Sister Abhaya case

In Sister Abhaya case, the expert study of the CD of narco analysis of the three main accused in the case have been proved tampered and edited.
The narco analysis CD was examined by experts at the Centre for Imaging Technology (C-DIT) as per the direction of the Ernakulam Chief Judicial Magistrate Court .
The high court had earlier held CBI for not submitting the original CD on the narco analysis of the three main accused in the case. However, the CBI pleaded innocence and told the court that if the CD was tampered, the tampering should have taken place in the Narco analysis lab in Bangalore where the narco analysis was conducted.
The court decided to seek the service of forensic experts when the Bangalore
lab also refused to acknowledge any tampering in the CDs.
The verification of the CD was done in the presence of the Advocate Commissioner appointed by the court. According to experts who analysed the CD, both the audio and video tracks of the original CD were heavily edited. There were also indications that the copy of the CD on narco analysis presented in the High Court was not original. Earlier, the Bangalore lab had claimed that only minimum editing required as per the technology was done on the CD.As per the prime explanation, it was said that the accused have agreed to the crime. The case is now on a turning point with the findings that the tapes were tampered with even before handing over it to CBI.It was on the month of February 2009 that CBI presented the original CDs in the court after taking evidence from Forensic Laboratory director Mohan and assistant director Malini. The Narco test was conducted on the three accused Father Thomas Kottoor, Father Jose Puthrukkayil and Sister Sephi.

how to spot a liar

Spotting a liar may not be difficult for you any longer, these r the tips help you to catch such behaviour clues as can help determine whether or not someone is trying to pull the wool over your eyes.

Liars, generally, can give themselves away by saying the wrong thing or having a particular tone or body language.
1.vocal tone :Liars can't help feeling a bit nervous when telling a lie, and to hide this nervousness, they will try to keep their vocal tone very stable and their voice can come out as a monotone.
when the pitch of a person's voice rises higher than usual while answering any questions, this signals that the vocal chords are constricting under the pressure of telling the lie, and that the liar has forgotten to keep the vocal tone stable.

2.A choking or catching sound in the voice is a sign of anxiety, and a signal that a person is literally choking on their words because they are uncomfortable saying them.
If they start using an angry tone and are being evasive, one can bet that they are getting fed up with being caught out on dangerous ground.

3.liars tend to tell a story that is overloaded with detail. skilled liar would know that giving too much detail in a story can be a giveaway, and thus give the least possible detail in an explanation.

4.Body language :it provide important clues about liars. A liar doesn't want to appear evasive so take note if they make eye contact for longer than is natural.
An inexperienced liar avoids eye contact so also watch for their eyes constantly flicking away.

5. The author people to take notice whether a person covers his/her mouth while speaking, as this is a defensive gesture typical of liars.

6.Other defensive body language could be crossing arms behind the neck and leaning away from someone.
A practised liar may not squirm in their chair but watch for other telltale signs of anxiety such as foot shaking, finger tapping or hand wringing as they answer your questions.

IMF wants India to eliminate mandatory investment norms

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) wants India to gradually eliminate the norms that make it mandatory for banks and other saving funds to park a portion of their funds in government securities. Making a case for strengthening of fiscal discipline, the IMF said in a report on India, "Strengthening financial market control mechanism involves gradually eliminating the availability of significant non-market based and captive sources of financing." According to the current guidelines, banks are required to park 24 per cent of their deposits in the government securities and government notified bonds. Similarly, National Small Savings Fund have to invest money in state governments' securities. It said that India needed a range of additional reforms which could help in strengthening fiscal discipline in the country. The report talks of eliminating such statutory liquidity requirement for banks to hold state issued paper, compulsory investment by the National Small Savings Fund in state debt and borrowings from public accounts. These suggestions appear in IMF's country report, which has been posted on the website of the Fund recently. Meanwhile, in terms of the reforms for state's finances, the multilateral lending agency also suggested cooperative arrangements between states and the Centre for a better framework. The reforms could work on transforming existing cooperation frameworks such as the bi-annual conferences of State Finance Secretaries into forums where both the Centre and the states could discuss subnational financial reforms and borrowing ceilings, the report said. The reforms could also aim at reducing states' dependence on central transfers, simplify the transfer system, and review the design of the transfer system on the basis of needs and fiscal capacity of the different states.

Most firms unaware of Web domain changes

Two thirds of businesses are unaware they will be able to use their own name in place of domain extensions such as .com, .org, or .net when Internet domains are liberalised next year, according to a survey. The change would let the likes of Nike or Microsoft control their own domain and better exploit their brands, and also counter cyber-squatters who use variations of brands on the 280 or so existing domain extensions."If you have '.nike', for example, you can create real and specific branded Websites, like 'running.nike' or 'runlondon.nike',
The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), which oversees domain names, is expected to start taking applications for new top-level domains early next year. Future Laboratory, which conducted the research. But the move is not on the radar of a majority of companies, the survey for Gandi.net found. "(Companies) are generally completely unaware of this change coming down the line,". "This change has not yet permeated into the mainstream for businesses or consumers.""However, those businesses which are aware actually see the prospect as being quite exciting,". The price of $185,000 will initially limit applications to the largest corporations and organisations. ICANN is expecting 300-500 applications when it opens its doors in the first quarter of next year, he said. "You'll see the big global corporations getting there early to own more of their online space," he said."(Owning their domain) could secure a higher level of credibility and recognition."Smaller businesses will be able to use more specific extensions to match their business sector or geography such as ".london" or ".paris", he said. The Future Laboratory surveyed 100 e-commerce managers; 50 from high-street companies and 50 from small and medium businesses online.

Jet, Kingfisher hike air fares; AI to follow soon

Air travellers will have to shell out more for their tickets from Wednesday with Jet Airways, Kingfisher Airlines and their no-frill subsidiaries hiking fuel surcharge by Rs 400 each on all domestic sectors and Air India indicating it will soon follow suit. The rise in fuel surcharge came in the wake of a 33 per cent increase in the prices of air turbine fuel (ATF) over the past three months, the airlines said.

For Jet Airways, the hike would take the total fuel surcharge on a ticket below a distance of 750 kms to Rs 2,450 and beyond that to Rs 3,400. For its no-frill subsidiaries Jet Airways Konnect and JetLite, it would be Rs 2,150 and Rs 3,100 respectively.

'Terrorism test' for Zardari

A day after his meeting with Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari in Russia, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Wednesday put Pakistan to the "terrorism test" and said he had agreed to give Islamabad "some time" to take action against anti-India terror outfits before the two leaders meet again in Egypt mid-July. Disclosing the details of his first meeting with Zardari since the November 2008 Mumbai attacks in the Russian city of Yekaterinburg on Tuesday, Singh said he told Zardari that India expected Pakistan to show the same "sincerity and determination" against these terror outfits as it had in tackling the Taliban and the Al Qaida on its western flanks. Singh said he would wait for the outcome of the talks between the foreign secretaries of the two countries, who are expected to meet later this month, before taking a decision on resuming the composite dialogue mid-July. "The purpose of this meeting [between foreign secretaries] is to find what Pakistan has done and what it plans to do on terrorist activities against India," Singh told reporters while returning home from Russia. "I told him that we will like to see tangible steps. There is a time. We will take stock of the situation," Singh replied when asked if there was a timeline for resuming the talks before he meets Zardari again on the sidelines of the Non Aligned Movement summit in Egypt in July. The Yekaterinburg ice-breaker meeting started with Singh telling Zardari upfront that India expected Pakistan not to allow its territory to be used for terror attacks against it. "Zardari told me the problems and difficulties he faces and said he needed more time [to tackle terror]. I explained to him that... we have a strong feeling that the elements who perpetrated terror attacks against India are not being brought to justice," Singh said.

MIcrosoft new search engine BING

In Chinese, it means a certain answer, or response to a query. It is also short, easy to spell and say and more attractive than ‘Live Search.’ And so Bing was born.
Microsoft unveiled its new search engine called Bing ( www.bing.com) recently in a bid to muscle its way into the Google-dominated world of search.

According to the Microsoft’s research, the results for 50 per cent of the queries do not satisfy users, who end up abandoning or refining their search effort.
In an attempt to make the user’s life simpler, Bing “has been designed to meet the needs of today’s searchers who are using search for purposes beyond ten blue links on a page. The features highlighted have two aims — making search easier and more organised.
For instance, the autosuggest feature that guesses what you are trying to type, or the ‘document preview’ which lets you hover over the search result and see a preview of the site’s content, are features that make the searching process simpler.

Instant answers :
The ‘Best Match’ is an attempt to reduce the number of clicks, by trying to provide the relevant information for your query up front. In case of direct queries, the ‘instant answers’ feature does what its name indicates — say, you are searching for a flight number, the recent flight information will be displayed up front.
Quick Tabs’ is a feature that helps make search more organised.
The video search also provides a preview if you hover over a particular result. And instead of navigating from one page to another all results are offered in an ‘infinitely’ scrolling page.
Bing also offers image, news and map-based search.

Helping travellers :
It has also identified shopping, travel, local business and information, and health-related research as areas of particular focus. Bing Travel, which has already been launched, offers tools and and features to help travellers make ‘more informed decisions.’ In the Indian context, though it comes up with flight and hotel information relating to the country, the prices are listed in dollars, which seems to indicate that it is not exactly tuned to the local market as of now.

Beta version : Bing now is in its Beta version.

GOOD SLEEP GOOD MEMORY

Los Angeles: A good night's sleep after a period of learning help brain preserve the most important memories, a new study has found.

Using data from a group of 44 college students aged 18 to 22, the study findings showed that sleeping helps brain use selective process to store most relevant information as long as four months.

The findings were presented Thursday at the Associated Professional Sleep Societies annual meeting, in Seattle.

The study was conducted by researchers at Harvard Medical School in Boston.

Think of sleep as a period of memory consolidation, where the sleeping brain calculates what is most important about a memory and selects the best candidates for long-term memory, said study author Jessica Payne, a postdoctoral fellow in psychology.

It i s found that that sleep seems to selectively preserve memories that are emotionally important and relevant to future goals.

People awakened after sleeping more than a few minutes are usually unable to recall the last few minutes before they fell asleep, earlier studies showed.

This sleep-related form of amnesia is the reason people often forget telephone calls or conversations they've had in the middle of the night. It also explains why people often do not remember their alarms ringing in the morning if they go right back to sleep after turning them off.

Breastfeeding and Better Academic Achievement

A new study has found a link between breastfeeding and better academic performance.
According to American University professor Joseph Sabia and University of Colorado Denver professor Daniel Rees, nursing leads to better academic achievement in high school and an increased likelihood of attending college.
The study, published June 11 in the Journal of Human Capital, looked at the academic achievement of siblings, one of whom was breastfed as an infant and one of whom was not, and discovered that an additional month of breastfeeding was associated with an increase in high school GPA of 0.019 points and an increase in the probability of college attendance of 0.014.

As per the study, which used data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health, more than one half of the estimated effect of being breastfed on high school grades and approximately one-fifth of the estimated effect on college attendance can be linked to improvements in cognitive ability and health.
"The results of our study suggest that the cognitive and health benefits of breastfeeding may lead to important long-run educational benefits for children," said Sabia, a professor of public policy in AU's School of Public Affairs whose research focuses on health economics. "But this is just a start. Much work remains to be done to establish a definitive causal link," the expert added. Professors Sabia and Rees examined the breastfeeding histories and high school grades of 126 siblings from 59 families. Information on high school completion and college attendance data was obtained from 191 siblings belonging to 90 families. By comparing the academic achievement of siblings, this study was able to account for the influence of a variety of difficult-to-measure factors such as maternal intelligence and the quality of the home environment.

After having recovered from a poor start to restrict the Lankans to 150 for 7, the Pakistanis were guilty of throwing away the match that seemed in their control at 101 for 3 in the 16th over with two set batsmen — Misbah-ul Haq and captain Younis Khan — at the crease. They ended up making 131 for 9.

Seven runs later, Younis Khan fell trying to force the pace, leaving the tailenders with an uphill task at the death but Lasith Malinga hammered the nails firmly into the Pakistan coffin.
Brief scores: Sri Lanka 150/7 in 20 overs (T. Dilshan 46) beat Pakistan 131/9 in 20 overs (Y. Khan 50; L. Malinga 3/17).

They claim that they can change the sex of a person on a computer by taking a live video feed of a person talking. In fact, according to the scientists, the software can take a live video feed of a person talking and make them look and sound like somebody else. During resaerch , the scientists recorded video of volunteers performing 30 different facial expressions such as frowning, smiling and looking surprised. For each expression, the positions of key facial features, such as the eyes, nose and corners of the lips, were manually labelled. That annotated footage was used to "train" software to recognise the face of each individual featured in the set. Once trained on a person in this way, it can closely track every move of their face in video footage. Those movements can then be transferred onto the face of another "known" person by calculating how the recipient's features need to change to take on each new expression.
